THE DAILY GAME IS BORN – Welcome to the Game
Monday morning the sun is bright, it’s 7:45 AM. the smell of fresh coffee floats in the office air. How was your weekend? I ask the first person I see. TOO SHORT!! comes back without hesitation.
My mind immediately begins to translate that means the week is too long! Oh wow.
Frank and I begin to chat about the challenge of work, when it pops out “Who said this is work, anyway?” Not sure who said it, a new context was born before our eyes. Someone made up that this thing we did each day, the never ending changing activities and tasks was called work. What if we decided to call this same set of activities and tasks play? Like playing a game? Who’d want to be late for the game? Who’d want to be in the bathroom for kickoff? (or face off, or the first pitch?)
And at the end of the day, just like when we were all kids, we’d be looking forward to getting up to get back into the game we made of for that day. Then and there we were at play, the game had started and our new journey began.
The game of the day was born all because someone said
the “weekend was too short.” Some thought this is sugar coating the thing called work, until we started thinking about how we kept score. Billing by the hour as consultants, at 4 pm, 7 hours into the day, I asked someone what his score was. He replied 3 to nothing. I thought for a moment, sounded more like 3 to 4 and he was losing. Wow, kind of a harsh game.
Now there is a score card. Every score card is really a little different. We move prospects and opportunities around the bases (this we actually got from
Growth Dynamics; it fits in perfectly.) Like in the pros; you need stats to analyse your game and performance. Finding areas to focus on, improve upon, get coaching.
Each day we create a new Game of the Day. Mostly documented with a morning email. You are welcome to join our list. Each day we create a context that makes each day a little different, something new to consider. A daily reminder to look at effectiveness is different aspects of our game. And no one want’s to lose their spot as a starter.
Naming Rights are sometimes available for the daily game. Send us an email if you’d like to secure naming rights to a day. My favorite so far, “ICBIF”
